Sir Trevor McDonald's last show

Friday, November 21, 2008, 12:28

Sir Trevor McDonald OBE has presented the News at Ten for the last time.

He said presenting the news show had been "special" before handing over as usual to regional bulletins across the country.

Fellow presenter Julie Etchingham paid tribute at the end of the broadcast and said it had been a "real privilege" to work him him.

Towards the end of the show, Sir Trevor introduced his last "and finally" story, which has become his trademark, about two old soldiers reuniting after years despite one believing the other had died in the Second World War.

The journalist, who was born in Trinidad, joined ITN in 1973 and has interviewed world leaders including US President Bill Clinton and South African President Nelson Mandela.

He left ITN news in 2005 but returned in January this year to front the News at Ten when it returned to its original time slot.

Speaking then, Sir Trevor said: "News at Ten made its name for things which are very clearly identifiable in the television world: We told the news in a very easy manner and in a very accessible manner. The reporting was always great, it was always innovative, it was always interesting. And I think that's what News at Ten did - it made people want to watch. Hearing those bongs was almost a kind of call to arms to make sure you were sitting in front of your television to watch what was happening."

Regarding the smoking ban, when you go out and go back home you no longer smell like an ashtray. Passive smoking kills. Period.
