We must tell Marks & Spencer what we want - not let them dictate
In response to Joy Litherland's comments (Scunthorpe Telegraph, October 4) – what rubbish!
How short-sighted of these people. Marks & Spencer left this town without a look back or concern for its loyal workforce. There will be no new jobs, only an exchange for the ones lost from the town centre shops that will inevitably close due to lost footfall.
Look around you, city and town centres are struggling and disappearing because of out-of-town shopping malls.
Scunthorpe town centre only exists now on pound shops, pawnbrokers and cake shops.

Surely it's not rocket science to realise that Scunthorpe town centre will only survive, grow and improve by quality shops moving into it and not creating a new site three miles away.
Yes, it would be great to have Marks & Spencer back in the town but not at the obvious cost it would create.
And as for the traffic, Berkeley Circle is a nightmare even on a quiet day (another cock-up by council planners).
Expand the traffic using this route and I envisage the whole area becoming a huge elephant in the room as it will be just too difficult to access.
Think about it rationally. Scunthorpe has few main routes in – one by Scotter Bottom and via the motorway and Gunness straight. These routes are chaos most days ... I know because I have to use them.
Scunthorpians need to tell Marks & Spencer what would be good for Scunthorpe, not have Marks dictate to them. After all we have survived several years without them.

I totally agree and shall be writing to them in support of their new venture in Scunthorpe.”
