All things nice for town's vegetarians
TASTY cakes, healthy soups and indulgent sandwiches are proving a hit with vegetarians in Beverley.
Sugar & Spice is the latest addition to the town's rich café culture but this business has brought a taste-tingling vegetarian menu for residents to indulge in.
The owners, Brandesburton couple Trish and Roy Sutherland, have come back to the region after spending the past seven years in the Scottish town of Shotts, where Trish worked as a librarian and Roy as an electronics engineer.
After a swift change in careers, the veggie-friendly café in Lairgate has now been open for almost three weeks.

Mrs Sutherland, who is a vegetarian herself, said: "When we decided to open the café, we wanted to be a bit different from the other places in town.
"A vegetarian café was something Beverley was missing.
"In towns, I often find there's usually a limited range of vegetarian foods available, so we thought we could help to change that and offer people different choices."
Sugar & Spice was born after Mrs Sutherland's keen passion for baking became an everyday occurrence.
She said: "It started to get to the stage where I was baking every day, so I decided to do this for a living and opening my own shop was something I always wanted to do."
Sugar & Spice is, according to Mrs Sutherland, the only café in the area providing a menu that is completely suitable for vegetarians.
It's a given that vegetarians don't eat meat but because of the different types of vegetarianism, some people also avoid other foods such as dairy and eggs.
Sugar & Spice has options suitable for various vegetarian diets.
Mrs Sutherland said: "Vegetarians can come and be confident what they are eating is suitable for their vegetarian diet.
"Some of the foods we have include eggs but others don't, so I can advise people on what to have to suit their diet."
The vegetarian diet is often perceived to be a healthy option but Mrs Sutherland is making sure there are plenty of choices on the menu that will tickle the taste buds of those with a sweet tooth, with a variety of cakes to sample.
Sugar & spice also provides vegan cakes and gluten-free soups.
It may be early days for the entrepreneurs but the husband and wife team are already planning the expansion of their business.
Mrs Sutherland said: "We are due to convert one of the upstairs rooms into a meeting room and quiet room for people to visit.
"Conversion work is already under way."
