United in need of third home win in a row to boost survival hopes
SCUNTHORPE United need something they have not achieved since they were first promoted to the Championship – a third home win on the trot.
Not since September 2007 have the Iron managed to take maximum points from three successive games at Glanford Park at this level.
-
RESPONSE: Iron boss Ian Baraclough.
But that has to be the target against big-spending play-off hopefuls Leicester City, following a bad night at Barnsley on Tuesday, where manager Ian Baraclough's men slipped four points adrift of safety once again.
"We can't afford to waste any games now and that is what hurt about Barnsley," admitted the United boss.
"I felt it was a wasted opportunity from a game we could have got something out of.
"With 11 games to go, every one counts, certainly at home.
"We have two key home games now (Leicester tomorrow and Preston on Tuesday) and we have to come out with a good return.
"If we approach them in the right manner we can come away with two positive results.
"We believe we can – and hopefully others around us will believe that too."
In a division that continues to throw up surprise results, Scunthorpe will be looking to add the Foxes to the scalps already claimed from promotion-chasing Nottingham Forest and Swansea City.
The Midlands outfit have slipped out of play-off contention after just one point from the last 12 – and won't fancy having to come to terms with the Glanford Park pitch.
"Sven-Goran Eriksson is a wily character, he will know what to expect coming here," said Baraclough.
"I am sure he will have played on a lot of pitches like ours in his own playing days.
"He has had a big effect since his arrival at Leicester.
"The mood around the city is that they should be up there pushing for promotion.
"They will come here fully expecting to roll us over.
"They have a big, strong squad and can play a number of different ways."
Baraclough's one big selection poser for tomorrow will be whether to bring back a fit-again Michael O'Connor.
It is likely he will have to settle for a place on the bench.
