Couch is denied by McManus in Prestatyn

Saturday, September 06, 2008, 09:18

MATTHEW Couch was denied a chance to reach the final stages of snooker's second ranking event of the season by one of the game's most experienced campaigners in Prestatyn.

Couch had won two matches to advance to the third qualifying round of the Shanghai Masters but lost out 5-2 to Alan McManus, a one time world number six who won the prestigious Wembley Masters in 1994.

The 34 year-old from Scunthorpe had beaten Liu Chuang, an 18 year-old from China who qualified for the TV stages of last season's World Championship, 5-1 in the first round.

He also recorded an authoritative 5-0 whitewash of Norwich's Barry Pinches in which he constructed breaks of 85, 76 and 51, but McManus proved a much tougher opponent.
