THE engineering industry is an exciting place to be at the moment – technology is moving on at great speed allowing us to reach oil and gas reserves we never thought we could, driving process plant performance. Add to this the ambitious renewable targets, and it means that the industry is set for major growth across the Humber region.

One local company benefiting from this growth is ABB Consulting. ABB Consulting, which boasts offices in our region, as well as Billingham, Cheshire, Aberdeen, Houston, the Middle East, South Africa and Singapore, provides technical consulting and engineering services across the chemical sector and process industries. Despite global demand, ABB still sees a significant market for their services in the local area.

In 2009, ABB Consulting opened offices at The Deep Business Centre in Hull. These offices have proved successful in providing a local base for ABB, which allows them to continue to support and increase the level of business within the local area.

Peter Hunt, business development director at ABB Consulting, advised that ABB plan to further expand their work within the chemicals, oil and gas, power, pharmaceutical and metal industries. He added: "The Humber offers us a strong region to do business in and opportunities for further growth."

ABB's services in the process industries can be broken down into the following areas: process safety, integrity management, project services, environmental services, industrial energy efficiency, inspection, specialist functional engineering, operations improvement, technical software and technical training.

Peter is no stranger to the Humber area, both personally and professionally; with relatives originating from Hull and Bridlington, and clients that include BP Dimlington and Saltend, Total LOR, Centrica Storage Ltd, Phillips 66, Millennium, Nippon Gohsei, px limited, Tata, Synthomer and many more.

"Our strategy has been to build relationships through a series of strongly focused and integrated, industry-relevant activities which demonstrate our unrivalled knowledge and experience. Through association with regional support groups such as the Humber Chemical Focus we have been able to extend our contacts and develop good working relationships with existing and potential customers."

Fundamental to ABB's success is their highly skilled workforce of engineers, but as a skills shortage plagues the industry, ABB Consulting are dedicating resources into developing future engineers and offering new challenges to experienced engineers.
