The motorway was closed westbound between junctions 3 and 4 until 11.43am.
The eastbound carriageway was also closed for a time this morning to allow the Air Ambulance helicopter to land, but has since reopened.
A Humberside Police spokesman said in the wake of the accident: "We would advise drivers to take it very carefully.
"There is a lot of standing traffic. If at all possible drivers should take an alternative route, or should think twice about whether the journey is imperative."

“I had to walk into town today & the roads (& paths) were treacherous. Did Scunthorpe council & the highways agency not see yesterdays weather forecast ?”
