WORK experience youngsters who go to McDonald's will be able to get a GCSE equivalent in recognition of the skills they learn.

Scunthorpe's McDonald's is the first local employer to provide a national qualification for work experience

The scheme is aimed at giving youngsters a unique opportunity to improve their employability.

Bob Meadowcroft who runs the three stores in Scunthorpe said: "We're raising the bar on work experience with this new alignment to a nationally-recognised qualification at a time when young people particularly need it."

This new and unique opportunity comes at a time when a new poll of 14-19 year-olds in Yorkshire and the Humber reveals that quality work experience has become a CV must-have for teens.

Liz Needleman, Business in the Community in Yorkshire and the Humber, added: "We strongly welcome this innovative initiative from McDonald's to get more young people into the workplace.

"We hope that other businesses, of all sizes, will follow McDonald's example by taking a leadership position on this important issue."

“Englander...as usual, same idiotic comment. If people so desperately want to work then they will find work. Seems the one's who are lazy, don't want to work etc are happy to use the "agency" excuse. Do people actually try applying directly to the company. Applying online via the job seeker websites which is the most popular way now. Or the tried and tested old fashioned way of walking into a business with your CV asking them to consider for any future vacancy's. So your pathetic and repetitive "no jobs for British workers, agency's not employing British" is just a poor excuse!”

“I can't think of a more motivated organisation than Mc Donalds to tain and give out qualifications . All you have to do is look at the original port folio of Mc Dolnalds he made the transistion into fat food outlets from his farm look easy ,when lots of others failed .Well done old Mc Donald .”

“This is a worrying development and actually confirms that the education system is failing yet some how examination results are getting better. I work for a training based company and we are seeing a sea change in how employers are required to operate especially if they want to benefit from Government funding and support. Employers are being pushed towards educating their employees in addition to training. Educating and training are fundamentally different and asking employers to prop up the education system is yet more pressure on industry. Watch this space, it is just the beginning and its wrong.”

“Well said Mick Dundee. Yes we know this isn't the most responsible, important job but they're hardly gona allow schoolkids into official establishments are they. Having said that they could probably do a better job than some of the morons in government but that's another matter. It doesn't matter what the job is, the qualification will reflect the dedication and experience they will learn from holding down a job and the values of being employed. To say it's a 'qualification in burger flipping' is totally missing the point.”
