There has been an increase in the number of birds of prey gathering over RSPB Blacktoft Sands nature reserve.

In recent weeks, up to 30 marsh harriers have been seen gathering over the reeds along with up to five hen harriers.

Together they perform a winter bird of prey spectacular.

In celebration of these majestic birds, Blacktoft Sands is hosting a series of special events on Thursday, January 31, Saturday 2 and Saturday, February 9, where a guide will talk visitors through this amazing natural spectacle.

Mike Andrews, visitor officer at Blacktoft said: "The birds arrive in ones and twos and then before you know it, a whole group of these awesome raptors are flying around enjoying themselves over the reeds at Blacktoft.  Then one by one, they settle down into the reeds to spend the night.

"Visitors might also catch the sight of the acrobatic manoeuvring of our smallest bird of prey, the merlin or see barn owls silently hunting around the reserve during these short winter days."

Tickets for the bird of prey event cost £4 and can be pre-booked by calling Blacktoft Sands on 01405 704665.

The events run from 3pm to 5pm.
